EXTRACT FROM THE RULES FOR THE ADMINISTRATION
OF THE ANTONIO FELTRINELLI FUND

ARTICLE 1

    The aim of the Antonio Feltrinelli Fund is to award national and international prizes to distinguished scholars in the various fields of science and the arts. The National Members of the Accademia dei Lincei are not eligible. The international prizes may be awarded to both Italians and foreigners. The prizes are conferred annually, in a rotation of the following disciplines:
  1. Humanities;
  2. Physical, Mathematical and Natural Sciences;
  3. Literature;
  4. Arts;
  5. Medicine.
    A further prize is awarded periodically for an exceptional enterprise of high moral and humanitarian value.

ARTICLE 2

    Proposals regarding the choice of disciplines or topics and the amounts of the prizes, will be dealt with, after consultation with the President’s Council, by the Class of Moral, Historical and Philological Sciences for groups nos. 1, 3 and 4 of article 1 of these Rules, and by the Class of Physical, Mathematical and Natural Sciences for groups nos. 2 and 5 of said article.
    The proposals made by the appropriate Class are submitted to the decision of the Academy in a plenary session in June of each year.

ARTICLE 3

    The decision to confer the above-mentioned prize for an exceptional enterprise of high moral and humanitarian value is taken by the Academy in a plenary session, bearing in mind the financial availability of the Fund, normally every five years.

ARTICLE 4

    Prizes are conferred hors concours in accordance with articles 8 and 9 of these Rules.

ARTICLE 5

    Prizes are awarded to individuals, except in those cases in which discoveries are made or scientific research carried out by two or more persons.

ARTICLE 6

    Posthumous awards are not made.

ARTICLE 7

    Prizes may be awarded to recipients of other international prizes only for new work or discoveries.

ARTICLE 8

    Presentation and examination of proposals, and the selection of prize winners is determined as follows.
    Once the various topics and prizes to be awarded in the successive academic year have been decided in accordance with article 2, the President of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei invites the National Members of the Academy, the Presidents of the major Italian Academies (including the Academies of San Luca and Santa Cecilia when the prizes are awarded for the Arts) and the Presidents of the major foreign Academies, when the prizes are international, to nominate worthy candidates.
    All designations should reach the Academy not later than 31 December of the same year.
    During the first fifteen days of the following January, the competent Class elects, by secret ballot and in accordance with article 2, an ad hoc jury for each prize. Each jury examines the relevant proposals received and its members may also nominate additional candidates.
    Each jury is composed of five elements, at least three of whom are members of the Academy. If deemed necessary, the components of the jury may be increased to seven, in which case at least four are members of the Academy.
    For prizes awarded in the Arts, the jury members are seven, four of whom are members of the Academy while the other three are experts in the chosen disciplines.
    Each jury elects its own president and secretary and establishes the order and procedures to be followed.
    Within 31 May the juries present their reports for each proposed candidate to the President’s Council.
    After adding its own opinions, the Council then submits the reports to the judgement of the competent Class and successively to the decision of all members of the Academy in a plenary session. All deliberations are by secret ballot.
    The reports of the juries, for publication in the special volume of the Antonio Feltrinelli prize ceremonies, only concern the winners of each prize.
    The prizes are awarded during a plenary session at which the winners may be called upon to illustrate their prize-winning works. These lectures are also published by the Academy.

ARTICLE 9

    The jury for the prize awarded to an exceptional enterprise of high moral and humanitarian value is chaired by the President of the Academy and consists of six members, three from each Class, nominated in a plenary session.
