Profile
Emeritus professor at the University of Padova (former Professor of general pathology); emeritus at the Istituto Veneto di Medicina Molecolare (VIMM).
Stefano Schiaffino has been Professor of General Pathology at the University of Padova, Director of the CNR Center of Muscle Biology and Physiopathology, and Vice-President of the Veneto Institute of Molecular Medicine (VIMM). Doctor honoris causa in Medicine, University Paris 7 - Denis Diderot, and University of Umeå (Svezia). Member of Accademia dei Lincei, Istituto Veneto di Scienze Lettere ed Arti, Accademia Galileiana in Padova, and Academia Europaea.
Schiaffino studied the diversity of muscle cells in skeletal muscle by electron microscopy and by generating monoclonal anti-myosin antibodies, widely used for muscle fiber typing. He discovered a novel fiber type (type 2X) in mammalian skeletal muscle and revealed the presence of distinct myosins in atrial and ventricular myocardium and in cardiac conduction tissue. He showed that muscle stem cells proliferate in response to hypertrophic stimuli and fuse with muscle fibers. Using in vivo intramuscular transfection techniques, he has identified specific signaling pathways that control muscle fiber diversification and muscle atrophy and hypertrophy.
