Brian Stock was raised in Canada, and is a dual citizen of Canada and France. He studied natural and medical sciences at the University of Toronto before attending Harvard University, graduating with the A.B. summa cum laude in 1962. He proceeded to studies in intellectual history at the University of Cambridge, U.K., completing his Ph.D. in 1966-67. In 1967 he was elected a junior fellow of the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies, Toronto, and in 1971 a senior fellow (corresponding to full professorship in the School of Graduate Studies of the University of Toronto). After 1991 his appointment was changed to senior professor of history and literature in the University of Toronto and Senior Research Associate, Victoria College, University of Toronto. He was invited to lecture at Collège de France in 1981 (declined) and in 1987; he was elected to the chaire internationale in 1996. He has been university professor in several institutions: University of California (1985), Dartmouth College (1991), and the Central European University, Budapest (2001-). He was Sather Professor of Classical Literature in the University of California, Berkeley, in 2001. His research deals chiefly with the history of science, literature, and philosophy in the late ancient and medieval periods, with special attention to the history of literacy and reading. Among his publications are The Implications of Literacy (1981) and Augustine the Reader (1996). In 2007 he was awarded the International Feltrinelli Prize of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei.
