Awards and Scholarships

Title V of the academic regulations provides for the award of prizes and scholarships, contributions and allowances for scientific research on the initiative of the Academy or on the initiative of others when it accepts the assignment, and also in collaboration with Italian and foreign bodies.

Awards and scholarships differ in the purposes and criteria according to which they are awarded:the former crown a life of research and work, rewarding discoveries and shields for the benefit of all humanity, the scholarships are established to encourage young scholars to research in various fields and allow the refinement of their scientificpreparation.

THE ORIGINS

Antonio Feltrinelli was born in Milan on 1 June 1887 to Giovanni Feltrinelli, grandson of Giacomo, founder of the Società Collettiva Feltrinelli from which would later emerge the company for shares Fratelli Feltrinelli, with various related companies.

An important figure in the Italian economic and financial field, Antonio Feltrinelli took over the management of the family group in 1935.

When, after the death of his brothers, he remains alone, he decides to dispose of his personal fortune to found a great Italian cultural institution "on the type of the Nobel Foundation". Therefore, in the will of 15 March 1936 (published in 1942) it provides that an inalienable and perpetual fund be established to: "to reward work, study, intelligence, those men who stand out most in high works, in the arts, in the sciences, since they are the true benefactors of their country and humanity".

The "Antonio Feltrinelli Fund" is an autonomous and inalienable heritage, managed by the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei in order to award national and international prizes to people who have made themselves famous in the sciences and arts. 

Luigi Einaudi, Head of State, in order to link up with the tradition of the Royal Prizes, established for the seventies of his office the National Prizes that were awarded every year from 1949 to 1955.

Giovanni Gronchi, Antonio Segni, Giuseppe Saragat, Giovanni Leone, Sandro Pertini, Francesco Cossiga, Oscar Luigi Scàlfaro, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, Giorgio Napolitano and Sergio Mattarella have continued the initiative of their predecessor.

The National Prize is awarded every other year by the Class of Physical, Mathematical and Natural Sciences and by the Class of Moral, Historical and Philological Sciences to works or discoveries of Italian scholars who have not previously been awarded a National Prize. The Prize is awarded without competition following reports from the members of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. 

From the academic year 1960-61, the Minister of Education has established two prizes (initially called «Minister of Education» and subsequently «Minister for Cultural Heritage and Activities») which are awarded to works or discoveries by Italian scholars, in alternate years according to a shift established between the various disciplines included in the two Classes of the Academy, the Class of Physical Sciences, Mathematics and Natural Sciences and that of Moral Sciences, Historical and Philological.

You are admitted to the competition on the recommendation of one or more members of the Academy or upon application.

Since 1971 the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei awards a prize to alternate years according to an established round between the various disciplines included in the two classes of the Academy.
