Profile

Dirigente di Ricerca del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche.

Marco Ligi currently serves as the Director of Research at the Institute of Marine Sciences, National Research Council (CNR) in Bologna. His career journey began as a database management systems consultant at ENEA in La Spezia. He then spent a year as a Visiting Research Scientist at Rice University in Houston, Texas, specializing in seismic data processing. For over three decades, he has dedicated his research efforts to the Institute of Marine Sciences.
Initially, his research focused on numerical cartography and database management systems, overseeing the Catalogue of Italian historical earthquakes and the Italian Seas bathymetry database. His interests later shifted to geophysics, particularly exploring the structural aspects of ocean basin origin and evolution. His work involved advanced tools such as multibeam and multichannel seismic data analysis, magnetic and gravity data inversion, and geophysical modeling.
Throughout his career, he led numerous oceanographic expeditions across the Mediterranean, Red Sea, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to geosciences, he was appointed the SGI-SIMP-SPI Distinguished Lecturer in 2013, received the "Prof. Luigi Tartufari" International Prize in Geosciences from the Italian Academy of Sciences in 2016, and became a member of the Accademia dei Lincei in 2023.
