D’Maris Coffman is Professor in Economics and Finance of the Built Environment at The Bartlett, UCL, where she is also Vice Dean Innovation & Enterprise. She joined UCL in 2014 from Newnham College of the University of Cambridge. From February 2017 to July 2023, she served as Director of the Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction. Professor Coffman is an Editor-in-Chief of Structural Change and Economic Dynamics. In 2020-22, she was Visiting Professor at the University of Milan and a Visiting Professor of Renmin University of China (2017-2022). She has recently been elected Distinguished Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University. She is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, the Society of Antiquaries of London, and the Royal Geographical Society. She is also a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Foreign Member of the Istituto Lombardo. Before UCL, she spent six years as a fellow of Newnham College where she started the Centre for Financial History.
Professor Coffman is a multi-disciplinary social scientist with over 130 publications across the fields of economic history, economic geography, political economy, infrastructure economics and environmental economics. She is also interested in translating neglected texts in the history of economic thought.
She and her husband, Dr John Prowle MA MB BChir MSc MD FRCP FFICM, who is a Reader in Critical Care Nephrology at QMUL and Consultant Physician at the Royal London, live in south London with their young son. In their free time, they enjoy skiing, travel, board games, and entertaining at home.
