Telematic Universities. A few Considerations

Telematic Universities

The views expressed in this document are the result of deliberations within the Lincei Committees on Universities and on Research, and were discussed and approved by the Joint Session of the National Academy of the Lincei on 13 February 2026.

These considerations concern a highly sensitive issue: the quality of distance university education, and in particular the education provided by telematic universities. Whilst online universities have enabled a much wider audience of students to access higher education, there are well-founded concerns that the standard of education achieved at many of these institutions is of inferior quality and contributes to the creation in our country of second-class degrees compared to those obtained at universities, both state and non-state, which deliver teaching through traditional methods. This would undermine the aim of expanding access to high-quality tertiary education to a wider audience.
