Statement from SICA
The Accademia dei Lincei issues the following statement of its Working Group for International Security and Arms Control (SICA), which met on 25 June:
- SICA appreciates the Israel - Iran ceasefire after the Israeli and American attack on Iran.
- Hopes are expressed that a new round of discussions may start as soon as possible among interested parties about the regulation of PACIFIC USE OF NUCLEAR ENERGY in Iran, resuming the principles of the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) approved in 2015.
- In particular it is important to reaffirm the limitations of Uranium enrichment within the 3.67%, appropriate to the industrial production of Nuclear Energy for pacific applications.
- The effective respect of the conditions stated in the new Agreement on Uranium Enrichment should be under the control of IAEA, that has to be enabled to freely inspect industrial installations all over Iran and who reports periodically the results to the United Nations.
- With a regard to the future stabilisation of the whole Middle East Region, SICA recommends to reexamine the possibility of establishing it as a Weapons of Mass Distruction Free Zone.
