Alessandro Bausi (Florence 1963, PhD 1992 Naples Oriental Institute) is a linguist and philologist specialized in Ethiopian Semitic languages and manuscript cultures. Assistant (1995) and Associate Professor (2002) of Ethiopic Language and Literature at the University of Naples ‘L’Orientale’, he has been Professor (W3) for Ethiopian Studies (Äthiopistik) at the Universität Hamburg and director of the Hiob Ludolf Centre for Ethiopian and Eritrean Studies (2009-2023). Since November 2023 he is Professor at Sapienza Università di Roma. He has been editor of Aethiopica, of its Supplements, of the Aethiopistische Forschungen (2009–2023), and is consultant for other series and journals, including the Scriptores Aethiopici of the Corpus Scriptorum Christianorum Orientalium, and the Texts and Studies in Eastern Christianity. Editor of the Encyclopaedia Aethiopica (2010–2014), Chair of the Comparative Oriental Manuscript Studies networking programme (2009–2014), and PI of the ERC Advanced Grant Project ‘TraCES’ (2014–2019), he is heading the long-term project of the Akademie der Wissenschaften in Hamburg ‘Beta maṣāḥǝft: Die Schriftkultur des christlichen Äthiopiens und Eritreas: Eine multimediale Forschungsumgebung’ (2016–2040). He is a member (permanent fellow 2023-) of the Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures (2011– ) and has been co-director of the Cluster of Excellence Understanding Written Artefacts (2019–2023).
